Christina Mazzalupo-N.Y.C. Artist and Local Treasure

April 23rd, 2010 § 0

I have been such a huge fan of N.Y.C. artist CHRISTINA MAZZALUPO for such a long time and I am just so happy to finally have a venue where I can show her off and share her with the rest of the world! Because HOT DAMN, this grrrrl is SMOKIN’ and you all need to be hipped to her!

Christina, like many artists, struggled to fit into the norm of the artistry world. (I know…it is like a super odd concept to think there is a norm in art, but there is!)

Take Me Somewhere Nice

She found her self trying to fit into the typical box of what art classes usually are (crafts and flowers) and didn’t actually find her own voice until her 3 year of school.

When asked “How would you describe your style?” by Diabetic Dew555

Christina simply replies

“I feel like an outsider artist who can’t be classified as “outside” because I have been educated in art.”

Christina has such a humorous soul, that even when confronted with dark and scary things she is able to turn those dark and scary things into something relate-able by everyone while managing to poke fun at herself.

Details

Her latest show called “Stomachache” which you can still catch at MIXED GREENS GALLERY is an actual food journal.

She had been suffering for many years from many food allergies that transpired in many ways and had been ask repeatedly to keep a food log. Finally she succumbed, but in her own way.

She was inspired to log her food journey in an 8 week count down to her 40th birthday, one piece for each week.

She is a treasure ….An honest find.

She wears her heart on her sleeve and on her work. Her comfort is Pencil, Ink on Paper and watercolors.

Coherence

Christina has a real obsession ….I mean passion for animals and often uses their point of view as hilarious observations in her  work.

This borough of NYC is just exploding bigger and bigger every day it seems. Even though I live in Manhattan, I try to spend at least a Sunday every couple of weeks in the new hot spot.
I found this article on Red Hook in the New York Times and thought I would share it with you so you can see for yourself why it might be a good place to head off to next time you are looking for a local treasure.
The artist there, the cafes and the parks are just some of the hidden wonders you will find once you get there.
